English: An 1817 lithograph of the Abgig obelisk. A description of the image is as follows:

  • Fig. 1. Vue de l'obélisque et du village de Begyg. Sur le premier plan est l'obélisque renversé à terre: à droite est un santon; à gauche, une caravane sortant du bois de palmiers qui condu it à el-Garadoû; dans le fond, est le village de Begyg.
  • Fig. 2. Plan de l'obélisque, pris par en-haut. La matière du monument est le gran it. Ce dessin exprime la forme particulière du sommet, qui est terminé par une surface cylindrique à base presque parabolique, au lieu du pyramidion ordinaire. On voit, au milieu, les projections horizontales des surfaces gauches, produites par le renfoncement de la panie moyenne, en forme d'entailles arrondies en tout sens. Il est probable que cette partie supportait quelque ornement qui a été enlevé. Les deux côtés de ce singulier obélisque sont de dimensions très-différentes, et presque sous-doubles.

English: "View and Details of the Obelisk of Begyg"
  • Fig. 1. View of the obelisk and the village of Begyg. In the foreground is the overturned obelisk on the ground: on the right is a santon; on the left, a caravan coming out of the wood of palm trees which leads to el-Garadoû; in the background is the village of Begyg.
  • Fig. 2. Plan of the obelisk, taken from above. The monument is made of granite. This design expresses the particular shape of the top, which is finished with a cylindrical surface with an almost parabolic base, instead of the ordinary pyramidion. We see, in the middle, the horizontal projections of the left surfaces, produced by the recess of the middle part, in the form of notches rounded in all directions. It is probable that this part supported some ornament which was removed. The two sides of this singular obelisk are of very different dimensions, and almost double.
