e Capitol.It is a magnificently decorative monument, though thedetail is at times dull, and even mediocre. However,it is certainly not my intention to discuss so famous awork, for and against which everything imaginablehas already been said.* As a fact, the portraits of thephilosophic Emperor, like those of his predecessor,Antoninus Pius, are neither impressive artistically, nordo thev reveal a particularly interesting peisonality.Perhaps the artist found no inspiration in his subject.The flat, somewhat meaningless, weak face, where notonly passion, but character, seems obliterated, doubt-less reflects faithfully enough the features of the authorof the Meditations, of the homme parfaitement hon—the philosopher on the throne.f But when we study * Cf.
