Леон Сильвер (англ. Leon Silver) — американский геолог, доктор наук, профессор, член НАН США. Инструктор по полевой геологии лунных экипажей Аполлона 13, 15, 16 и 17[1].

Происхождение, ранний период и образование[править]

Появился на свет в семье евреев из России и Польши[2].

В 1943—1946 гг., в том числе в период ВОВ, служил ВМФ США, младший лейтенант.

В 1945 г. получил степень бакалавра в Колорадском университете в Боулдере, в 1948 г. — степень магистра в Университете Нью-Мексико, а в 1955 г. — Ph.D. по геологии и геохимии в Калтехе.

Параллельно с учёбой, в 1947—1954 гг., трудился помощником геолога в ОМПИ в Геологической службе США на территории в Колорадо и Аризоны.

Научно-преподавательская деятельность[править]

Затем трудился в Калтехе — преподаватель (1955—1962), доцент (1962—1965), профессор (1965—1983), профессор геологии природных ресурсов (1983—1996).

Состоял председателем ККУФЭ Министерства энергетики (1990—1992), членом руководящего комитета Группы синтеза NASA, оценивавшей сценарии миссий для Президентской инициативы по исследованию космоса (1990—1991) и членом президентского консультативного комитета по модернизации космической станции (1993)[3][4].

Работая с NASA, обучал астронавтов полевой геологии, фактически создавая лунную полевую геологию как новую дисциплину. Играл видную роль в геологическом изучении Луны в ходе «Apollo program»:

В 1971 г. удостоился медали НАСА со следующей формулировкой:

За значительные научные достижения в разработке высокоточных изотопных составов урана и свинца в минералах и применении методов определения возраста при анализе лунного материала. Усердно проводя эти лабораторные исследования лунного материала, он внес большой вклад, обучая астронавтов геологическим наукам, что благодаря его энтузиазму, лидерству и руководству привело к успешному исследованию Луны[6].

В 1974 г. стал членом НАН США.

В 1979 г. — президент ГОА[7].

Области исследований — петрология, тектоника и приложение геологии и изотопной геохимии к геохронологии, эволюции земной коры, рудным месторождениям и сравнительной планетологии.
