Continuity (cognate with the Russian стя́нуты) is the character of such things as are together (Latin prefix con-) held (Шаблон:Latin Шаблон:Verb tenere) in uninterrupted, gapless, singly directed succession. In mathemamics, the continuum, also known as the real number line, captures the complete totality of possible numbers, such that each number can be uniquely defined via the Dedekind cut: a separation of the real continuum into strictly two sets, one of all greater numbers than the given, and the other containing all the lesser numbers.
The concept of continuity is among such as were postulated and critiqued in the philosophy of European classical antiquity, while not yielding to complete analytical treatment until the dawn of the 20th century. The demands of empirical science combine the need for the accurate coördinatization of measurements with the recognition of any measurement as being of finite accuracy, with both error and uncertainty at play. Mathematics offers models both discrete and continuous, for the construction of coördinate systems, while natural science relies on the continuum as a valid model for each of the components of spacetime and for real-valued physical magnitudes including the fundamental constants of elementary particle physics and of cosmology.
