Михаэль Эдвард Стоун (англ. Michael Edward Stone, ивр. מיכאל אדוארד סטון) — англо-австралийско-израильский учёный, профессор армянских исследований в Еврейском университете в Иерусалиме.

Биография

Майкл Стоун родился 22 октября 1938 года в Лидсе, Англия.

В 1941 году с семьёй переехал в Сидней в Австралии.

В 1956—1960 годах получил степень бакалавра в Мельбурнском университете в области семитских и классических языков.

В 1960 году репатриировался в Израиль.

В 1960—1961 годах — в Еврейском университете.

В 1961—1965 годах получил докторскую степень по ближневосточным языкам в в Гарвардском университете в Соединённых Штатах. Его докторская работа была посвящена эсхатологии 4 Ездре.

Затем стал преподавателем в области сравнительной религии в Калифорнийском университете в Санта-Барбаре.

В 1966 году вернулся в Израиль, стал преподавателем религии Еврейского университета, а в следующем году стал доцентом. В 1980 году стал полным профессором арменоведения и профессором религиоведения. В 2007 году уволился из Еврейского университета.

В 1967 году начал преподавать грабар (древнеармянский язык).

Сыграл существенную роль в создании «Armenian Studies Program» в Еврейском университете, как одного из ведущих в мире центров армянских исследований. Также основал руководимую им же «Армянскую международную ассоциацию» (Association Internationale des Etudes Arméniennes).

В 1977—1983 годах — профессор истории и армянской культуры в Университете Пенсильвании.

Призывает Израиль признать Геноцид армян в Османской империи.

В 2010 году был удостоен грамоты министерства диаспоры Республики Армения.

Автор 40 книг и более 400 статей.

Является ведущим учёным армянских исследований во многих областях, в области ранней иудейской и христианской литературы и Ветхого Завета, еврейской литературы периода Второго Храма. Занимался переводами средневековой армянской поэзии, например Аракела Сюнеци. Занимается исследованием археологических памятников как армян в Израиле и на Синае, так и евреев в Армении, в частности в Ехегисе. В частности, он говорит:

В 1970-1980-ых годах на горе Синай и в ее окрестностях мы обнаружили очень древние армянские рукописи. Они были сделаны в 430-440 годах – то есть в то время, когда, по всей видимости, Месроп Маштоц был еще жив.

Также учёный сказал:

Как-то мой профессор посоветовал мне начать изучать армянский язык. Я начал учить язык, занимался с преподавателем Аветисом Ханджяном, иерусалимским армянином, и просто влюбился в этот язык.

Я начал изучать армянский в ходе написания моей докторской работы. Тогда зародилась во мне любовь к армянскому народу и его творческому духу. Я научился ценить также армянскую музыку и искусство благодаря моей супруге, которая является специалистом в сфере армянской культуры.

Регулярно работает в Институте древних рукописей Матенадаран имени Св. Месропа Маштоца в Ереване.

В 2017 году сообщалось, что Стоун и филолог Арам Топчян подготавливают книгу об истории евреев Армении.

В 2019 году был избран членом АН Израиля.

Его супруга Нира Вайнтрауб занималась историей византийского и армянского искусства, и много лет преподавала в Еврейском университете. У них двое детей.
