Майкл Стюарт Браун (англ. Michael Stuart Brown) — американский генетик, врач и биохимик, исследователь регуляции метаболизма холестерина[1].

Научная карьера[править]

Майкл Браун родился 13 апреля 1941 года в Бруклине в Нью-Йорке.

В 1962 году окончил Университет Пенсильвании.

В 1966 году окончил медицинскую школу этого университета Пенсильвании, получил докторскую степень.

Затем прошёл двухгодичную интернатуру в Массачусетской общей больнице в Бостоне.

Позже работал в Национальном институте артрита и болезней обмена веществ в Бетесде, штат Мэриленд.

В конце 1960-х годов приступил в тесном сотрудничестве с Джозефом Голдстайном к экспериментальным исследованиям нарушений холестеринового обмена, Браун не только сделал ряд крупных открытий в гастроэнтерологии, однако и коренным образом изменил научные представления о механизме взаимодействия крови и клеток в организме в целом. Браун доказал, что в поверхностных структурах клеток тканей имеются специфические рецепторы, ответственные за обмен веществ между этими клетками и кровью; открыл те рецепторы, которые регулируют абсорбцию клетками холестерина из крови; установил, что избыток холестерина в крови есть результат генетического дефекта отсутствия рецепторов этого вида.

С 1971 года работает на Юго-Западном медицинском факультете Техасского университета в Далласе (с 1977 года — профессор генетики и директор центра наследственных заболеваний).

В 1985 году вместе с Джозефом Голдштейном получил Нобелевскую премию по медицине и физиологии за исследования наследственной гиперхолестеринемии и открытие рецептора липопротеинов низкой плотности (за открытие рецептора липопротеинов низкой плотности).

Женат, имеет двое детей.
